The Contributions of Bryce DeWitt to Classical General Relativity

Larry Smarr in Ahead of His Time: Bryce S. DeWitt. Essays on the Quantum Theory of Gravity in Honor of his 60th Birthday, 1984, ed. S. Christensen (Adam Hilger, Lmt.: Bristol, England).

It is with great pleasure that I review the work of Bryce DeWitt. I had the honor of working with him during my graduate student days at the University of Texas. Indeed his support in early years made my career possible. I was one of the few colleagues Bryce has had that chose not to do quantum gravity. I suppose it is therefore appropriate that I attempt to summarize his work in classical gravity.
